Quality Management (QM) is an important aspect of production processes that ensures the reliability of products/services according to customer requirements. The traditional methods and tools of QM are useful for detecting errors and improving decision making. However, they have a delay in the execution of corrective actions. Industry 4.0 technologies have been improving the digitization of the factory with several advantages in terms of production efficiency, product quality, and cost reduction.
The internet of things (IoT), Big Data, Visual inspection, and Cloud Computing are examples of Industry 4.0 technologies that have been improving the productivity and efficiency of manufacturing processes. Furthermore, the integration of these technologies into the Total Quality Management (TQM) approach can result in Quality 4.0 (Q4.0). It is essential to prioritize the process, not the data when utilizing Q4.0. This integration can bring many benefits and lead to more efficient and effective manufacturing processes.
This article explores the relationship between Quality Management practices and new technologies of Industry 4.0. The paper suggests which technology to apply in different quality management practices by presenting a table that shows the relationship between seven Industry 4.0 technologies and different Quality Management practices. These technologies include Data Science and Statistics, Enabling Technologies, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Neural Networks, and Deep Learning. This table can be used to save time and resources while choosing the technology to apply to different quality management practices.
The paper suggests the need for empirical and quantitative studies to determine the influence of Industry 4.0 on quality management practices and overall company performance. Thus, companies that want to improve their manufacturing processes should invest in Quality Management practices and Industry 4.0 technologies to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and improve product quality.
Furthermore, Quality Management practices should be viewed as part of an integrated approach supported by just in time (JIT), human resource management, top management support, technology management, and strategic management. Regardless of the type of Quality Management approach used, customer satisfaction should always be the primary focus, and non-quality costs should be minimized.
In conclusion, the integration of Industry 4.0 technologies into Quality Management practices can significantly improve overall manufacturing processes' efficiency and effectiveness. Therefore, companies should invest in new technologies and tools relevant to their Quality Management practices to stay competitive in today's digital world. Empirical studies may help companies identify the best technologies and practices for their manufacturing processes to achieve optimal efficiency, profitability, and customer satisfaction.
