What is Quality 4.0? An exploratory study of manufacturing companies

15 March, 2023

In today's fast-paced world, manufacturers are looking for innovative ways to improve their product quality and traceability. Integrating Industry 4.0 (I4.0) with Quality 4.0 (Q4.0) is one such approach that can help achieve these goals. A recent study reveals that the use of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs), big data analytics, and smart sensors can significantly enhance product quality and traceability.

The study emphasizes the importance of upskilling and reskilling the workforce to adapt to the latest technologies. It also highlights the significance of top management commitment and the establishment of strategic goals, objectives, and indicators, which play a crucial role in the successful implementation of Q4.0. The authors suggest that collecting and analyzing data using smart sensors, RFID, bar codes, and cameras can help identify areas for improvement and make informed decisions.

One of the interesting findings of the study is the discrepancies among the quality managers regarding the Q4.0 model. Some prefer the I4.0 model, while others prefer the ISO 9001 structure. This highlights the need for standardization and a clear understanding of the Q4.0 model to achieve its full potential.

The authors also emphasize the importance of quality practitioners upskilling in artificial intelligence and machine learning to use data effectively. This will enable them to develop and implement Q4.0 models that align with their organization's goals and objectives.

Overall, this study provides a theoretical model for Q4.0 that practitioners can use as a guideline for implementing and developing Q4.0. However, further empirical research is needed to test the proposed model. The study provides valuable insights into the integration of I4.0 and Q4.0 in the Italian manufacturing sector and suggests directions for future research.

In conclusion, integrating I4.0 with Q4.0 can significantly enhance product quality and traceability. The use of CPSs, big data analytics, and smart sensors can help identify areas for improvement and make informed decisions. Upskilling and reskilling the workforce, standardization, and a clear understanding of the Q4.0 model are critical for its successful implementation. It is time for manufacturers to embrace these technologies and achieve the highest levels of quality and traceability.
