The Fourth Industrial Revolution or Industry 4.0 has transformed the service and manufacturing industries with the advent of digital technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning and sensor technology. However, to fully realize the potential benefits of Industry 4.0, it is crucial to develop Quality Management and Quality Engineering. These were the findings of a recent scientific paper that explored the relationship between Industry 4.0 and Quality Management.
Through a systematic literature review, the authors identified key themes that underscore the importance of a quality-driven strategic focus for Industry 4.0 implementation. The paper also suggested that a focus on Quality Management and Continuous Improvement is necessary in order to gain positive benefits from Industry 4.0 developments, as technology alone will not produce significant benefits. TQM, Six Sigma and Lean manufacturing were identified as superior approaches to quality improvement. The authors proposed a Quality Management Assessment Framework (QMAF) that covers many of the TQM elements, and a Business Process Management (BPM) model that describes IT in a supporting role in managing the business process.
The paper also discusses Knowledge-based Digital Six Sigma, a new paradigm for Six Sigma. Incorporating a quality-driven approach in the transformation to Industry 4.0 is crucial for improved competitiveness and product development. This was the finding of a scientist who specializes in both Quality Engineering and Management. This scientist proposed a new approach called DMAMP, which integrates modeling and predicting into the traditional Six Sigma cycle.
Furthermore, the implementation of Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) in high-tech organizations was identified as necessary for improved competitiveness and product development. Another scientist specializing in logistics and supply chain management emphasized the impact of technology on supply chain strategy. The integration between Quality Tools and Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques in a Quality 4.0-driven strategy was identified as an area for further research.
In conclusion, Quality Management and Quality Engineering are crucial to realizing the potential benefits of Industry 4.0. TQM, Six Sigma and Lean manufacturing are superior approaches to quality improvement. It is necessary to incorporate a quality-driven approach in the transformation to Industry 4.0 for improved competitiveness and product development. Finally, the integration between Quality Tools and Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques in a Quality 4.0-driven strategy deserves further research.
